Acne Scarring Treatment Toronto | Get Rid of Acne

Acne scarring involves several aspects; each of them needs to be identified and discussed, as each acne scarring case may require different treatment options. Our dermatologists at Toronto Acne & Rosacea Centre are experts in acne scar removal and acne scar treatment and are happy to discuss a treatment plan that’s right for you.

Acne scars can result in changes in the surface, volume and movement of the skin.

1. Surface acne scar treatment involves altering the colour of the scar (e.g. lasers, broad band or intense pulse light) and inducing or decreasing collagen in the underlying tissue.
2. Volume treatment involves filling of atrophic (depressed) areas or sometimes decreasing the volume with hypertrophic or keloid scars.
3. Movement problems can be treated with neurotoxins such as botulinum toxin (BOTOX).
4. Surgical acne scar treatment includes punch techniques, excisions, and subcision.

Grade 1 Acne Scars:

In this case, there are mostly surface and colour issues that require treatment, with areas of scarring showing up as flat, pink areas, and in some cases brown (in case of darker skin types) or too pale. Acne scar treatment in this case includes: over-the-counter skin products (e.g. containing vitamin C, retinol, tretinoin, hydroquinone, azelaic acid, glycolic acid), chemical peels, medical-grade microdermabrasion, laser and broad band light or intense pulse light.

Grade 2 Acne Scars:

Also mainly surface scars, including slightly depressed or thickened skin that can be concealed with makeup and may not be that noticeable from a distance. This level of scarring is a result of modified collagen reflectance, loss of skin glow, and shadows cast by scars. In this case skin surface improvement and mild volume changes are required.

Treatment also includes over-the-counter products at home as mentioned in Grade 1 scarring, & chemical reconstruction of skin scars (CROSS) and subcision. Chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and laser resurfacing (e.g. ProFractional laser) can be used to improve the quality of the underlying collagen as well.

Grade 3 Acne Scars: "Moderate Scarring"

With this level of acne scaring, there is moderate atrophic (depressed scars), or hypertrophic (thickened) acne scars. Scars are visible at conversational distance, & can be flattened through stretching out of the skin, but can’t be easily concealed with makeup.

Moderate scarring often benefits from «multi-modality» treatment, meaning improving scars with fillers, laser resurfacing treatment (e.g. ProFractional laser), sometimes use of neurotoxins (e.g. Botox) to decrease movement in the area, and surgical interference, such as subcision or punch excisions.

Subcision is especially helpful for lifting up acne scars that are dish-like in quality and are inclined to be tethered down to underlying structures. The procedure is performed with a hypodermic or other needle, often with saline injection (“chemical subcision”). For acne scar removal, Toronto Acne & Rosacea Centre has extensive experience.

Grade 4 Acne Scars: "Severe Scarring"

Severe acne scarring is non-distensible and represents obvious atrophic (depressed) or hypertrophic (thick) scarring that is visible at a conversational distance and can’t be flattened by stretching of the skin. Severe type of scarring includes: deep box scarring, ice pick scarring, deep divots, and hypertrophic (thick) scarring.

At Toronto Acne & Rosacea Centre, we improve the skin surface with the CROSS technique or laser resurfacing (e.g. ProFractional laser), improve volume (e.g. use fillers in depressed areas), use neurotoxins like Botox to reduce movement, and use surgical options such as punch excisions or ellipse excisions of scarred areas to treat severe acne.
