Acne Gel | Acne Creams | Benzoyl Peroxide

Acne treatment is an ongoing process that requires time and patience to achieve positive results. Toronto Acne Centre will provide you with a comprehensive skin assessment to determine your custom treatment plan.

The most effective acne treatment your dermatologist recommends will vary according to your type of acne and skin type. For the best acne treatment in Toronto, call: (416) 633-4343.

Topical creams & gels:

  • For successful acne treatment, dermatologists may prescribe topical creams, gels, or lotions with vitamin A acid-like drugs, benzoyl peroxide, or antibiotics to help unblock the pores and reduce bacteria that cause acne.
  • The acne treatment products may result in some drying and peeling; if your skin becomes irritated, abstain from using your cream or add a moisturizer (e.g. apply medicated cream/gel first, and 1 minute later apply a moisturizer overtop). Be patient. It takes 2-3 weeks for topical acne treatments to start working, and full-effect can take 2-3 months.
  • Before starting any medication, even topical medications, inform your doctor if you are pregnant or nursing, or if you are trying to get pregnant.

Examples of Acne Topical Treatments in Canada:

Topical Combination Products:

Combination therapy is a treatment that has 2 ingredients within it.

1) Topical retinoid (tretinoin) plus 4% erythromycin (Stievamycin® - mild, regular, forte formulations) Apply thin layer to affected areas before bedtime after the skin has been washed, rinsed and patted dry.

2) Topical 5% benzoyl peroxide plus erythromycin (Benzamycin®).
Apply a thin layer to affected areas once per day after the skin has been washed, rinsed and patted dry. This product must be refrigerated and may bleach clothing.

3) Topical 5% benzoyl peroxide plus 1% clindamycin (Benzaclin® or Clindoxyl®) - Apply once per day to skin that has been washed, rinsed and patted dry. This product does not need to be refrigerated, and may bleach clothing.

4) Topical benzoyl peroxide 2.5% + adapalene 0.1% (Tactuo gel®) - Apply once per day to skin that has been washed, rinsed and patted dry. This product does not need to be refrigerated, and may bleach clothing.

5) Topical 1% clindamycin + 0.025% tretinoin (Biacna gel®) - Apply once per day to skin that has been washed, rinsed and patted dry. This product does not need to be refrigerated, and it does not bleach clothing.

Single Ingredient Treatment Options For Acne:

1) Benzoyl Peroxide:

Benzoyl peroxide (2.5-10%) improves acne by killing the acne bacteria P. acnes (it is antimicrobial, though not an antibiotic) and by unblocking oil glands ("comedolytic"). There are many different benzoyl peroxide products available, some over the counter, others by prescription (those found in combination products are always by prescription).

2) Retinoids:

Retinoids (e.g. tretinoin, adapalene, tazarotene) are the most effective type of medication for unblocking plugged oil glands (blackheads & whiteheads - "comedones"). Your dermatologist can select which retinoid would suit your skin type best. These can come in cream or gel formulations, and in some cases slow release vehicles to reduce irritation potential.

3) Antibiotics:

Antibiotics (clindamycin or erythromycin) applied topically are anti-inflammatory and reduce the bacteria P. acnes, thus they are best suited for treating papules and pustules, and not so much comedones.
